Frou Frou: biscuits, family succession and Nicosia’s industrial outskirts
Frou Frou’s history moves from a decision made by two brothers to production in Engomi and a later factory in Kokkinotrimithia. Its published timeline is particularly useful when read carefully: founding, first production and relocation belong to different years.
Based on the company’s own published history. Historical interpretation by BEST; this article is not a company endorsement.
The decision in 1964, production in 1965
The company dates the collaboration of brothers Haris M. Hadjikyriacos and George M. Hadjikyriacos to 1964, under the name Hadjikyriacos Biscuit Industries. Its first Frou Frou biscuits followed in 1965 at the manufacturing site in Engomi, Nicosia.
That one-year distinction explains why the company celebrated fifty years of manufacturing in 2015 and sixty in 2025. Those anniversaries count from production, rather than the initial decision to establish the business. The history of a company often has more than one meaningful starting point.
Morning Coffee and a larger production line
The company places the introduction of Morning Coffee biscuits in 1967. Its 1969 entry describes expansion of the factory, a German Hecrona continuous biscuit line and automatic packing equipment. These were separate stages of product development and increased manufacturing capacity.
The machines are part of the story, not simply background to a brand name. The published account describes a move towards continuous production and automated packing. It does not establish that every item sold later was manufactured with the same equipment or at the same site.
War and family succession
The company’s 1974 entry describes disruption to its Famagusta operations and its Turkish Cypriot business connections during the war. This belongs to the 1974 chapter, not to the preceding 1969 machinery expansion.
In 1983, Alkis H. Hadjikyriacos, Haris’s son, entered the next-generation leadership account. The published history says the two families ended their collaboration and Haris and Alkis bought the business. This is the company’s own description of the ownership transition; it does not provide a complete history of everyone who worked there.
A broader food business
An imports division appears in the 1985 entry, followed by intensified biscuit exports in 1986. Cadbury representation in 1993 and the Spinneys Cyprus agreement in 1997 show the account extending beyond manufacturing alone.
The Golden Choice cereal operation at Engomi is dated to 2002. The factory relocation to Kokkinotrimithia comes in 2007, when biscuit and cereal production began at the new site. Keeping these events separate avoids moving the factory five years too early.
What the changing locations tell us
Later entries record Handy Snacks in 2010, expansion of Paphos warehouse facilities in 2011 and the Mon Ami acquisition in 2013. These developments belong to a wider group network, rather than proof that all production remained within Engomi.
This is a modern Nicosia-area industrial history, based on the company’s own chronology. Engomi and Kokkinotrimithia should be treated as distinct locations when consulting a map. An industrial address does not promise a museum, a factory shop or a public tour. For visits or enquiries, confirm the appropriate location directly with the company instead of navigating to the former factory by assumption.
