Nicosia and Europe: municipal cooperation since 2003

Nicosia’s modern civic history includes cooperation beyond Cyprus. Its municipality records an April 2003 council decision to establish a European Affairs Office.

The work behind international links

The municipal account describes coordination and planning of European affairs, funding applications and support for other municipal departments. City relations, public briefings and bicommunal programmes also feature in its description.

Networks and recognition

Among the networks listed by the municipality are UCLG, Eurocities and the Strasbourg Club. The same account records a Council of Europe European Diploma in 2013, followed by a Plaque of Honour and Flag of Honour in 2014.

Cooperation is not the same as twinning

A city network, an award and a formal sister-city agreement describe different relationships. This source documents cooperation and recognition; it does not provide a list of named twin cities. The Council of Europe should also be distinguished from the European Union.

A different way to read the capital

Alongside walls, churches and museums, administrative decisions are part of a city’s history. Here, the useful question is how the municipality organised its external work. Read the dates as milestones in that record, rather than as a complete account of every international relationship or a guarantee that every listed membership remains unchanged.
