Ohi Day: history and the programme for 28 October 2026 — Nicosia
Checked 27 October 2026
On 28 October 2026, Ohi Day marks 86 years since Greece rejected an Italian ultimatum in 1940. The anniversary is also commemorated in Cyprus with services, wreath laying and parades.
What happened in 1940?
On 28 October 1940, the Greek government rejected the ultimatum delivered by Fascist Italy. Italian troops then invaded Greece. Greek resistance pushed the invading forces back into Albania; Germany invaded Greece in April 1941. The holiday commemorates the refusal and the resistance that followed.
Why is it called Ohi?
Όχι (Ohi or Ochi) means “No” in Greek. It became the symbol of the rejection of the ultimatum. The familiar name summarises that refusal; it should not be read as a verbatim transcript of the diplomatic exchange.
How long has it been celebrated?
The first anniversary was commemorated in 1941, during the occupation. A Greek decree of 24 October 1944 established the national anniversary; the first official state celebration followed on 28 October 1944. In 2026, that is 82 years since the first official celebration in Greece. These dates describe Greece; they do not establish when Cyprus adopted its own observance.
